Are stadium fries gluten-free?
Plain potato fries have no gluten, but at a stadium the fryer decides. Fries often share oil with breaded chicken and onion rings, and some coated fries sold to restaurants contain wheat flour. Of the 39 stadium guides on this site that list fries for people avoiding gluten, only Tropicana Field has an official page that says the fries come from a dedicated gluten-free fryer. Ask how the fries are cooked before you order.
17 of the 39 use the word gluten-free for fries at the stands, 16 use the venue’s softer word (gluten-friendly, avoiding gluten, gluten-sensitive, gluten-restricted) and 6 list fries only in suites or clubs. 38 of the 39 don’t say their fries have a fryer of their own, so a label is not a fryer check.

A potato has no gluten, so plain fries start out gluten-free. Two things change that. Some frozen fries are coated before they are frozen, and the coated, extra crispy fries McCain and Lamb Weston sell to restaurants list wheat flour. And fries are often cooked in the same oil as breaded chicken, onion rings or corn dogs. Beyond Celiac says “High heat will not eliminate gluten in the oil, so fryers used to make breaded or battered items would not be safe for gluten-free French fries.”
Testing shows the risk is real but not certain. In a study led by the Celiac Disease Foundation and published on October 20, 2026, 6 of 55 fry orders cooked in fryers also used for gluten-containing foods (about 11%) had more than 20 ppm of gluten, the U.S. limit for a gluten-free label. Across all 98 fry and tortilla chip samples, none of the 39 from places that said they change the oil every day went over 20 ppm, against 4 of 35 from places that change it weekly; the study could not show that the oil changes caused the difference. The lead author said: “This study is not a green light to eat from any shared fryer.” An earlier Gluten Free Watchdog pilot study found that 25% of fry orders from shared fryers would not be considered gluten-free.
Seasoning is the other catch. The National Celiac Association says “seasoned” or flavored fries often contain wheat starch or wheat flour, and gravy, cheese sauce and chili need their own check.
Questions to ask at the stand:
- Are the fries cooked in their own fryer, or in the same oil as chicken tenders, onion rings, corn dogs or anything breaded?
- How often is the fryer oil changed?
- Are the fries coated or seasoned? If so, can I see the label?
- Are the toppings (gravy, cheese sauce, chili) labeled gluten-free?
- Can you use clean gloves, a clean scoop and a clean tray for my order?
Each company’s own words, checked on its website on October 24, 2026. A stand may not use these brands, and a chain’s stadium stand may not cook the way its restaurants do, so ask.
